I'm no journalist, I'm no gossip hack. I'm just here to give you a random collection of the things I love and want to share with my friends who just aren't dorky enough to find it all for themselves.
Enjoy the ride...because gas is expensive and I might have to park my spaceship one day.
Right now, I sit at my desk absolutely stunned that I have not mentioned Rubber at ANY point on this blog. I have no idea how this is possible.
In short...Rubber is a film by Mr. Oizo about a tire...a tire?...a tire...that comes to life and goes on a murderous rampage. Comes out Nov. 10. Zeus only knows where one goes to actually see it.
That's all lovely, but the film isn't my main priority, it's the potential monster of a soundtrack. There's the obvious greatness of new shit from Mr. Oizo, but oh no, that's not all. This soundtrack is a collaboration between Oizo . . .and Gaspard Auge of Justice! Comes out Nov. 9. Let's enjoy a taste, shall we:
I guess this is technically a commercial, not really music video?
I don't know. Either way, this is the jam, and the video amused me. Some very sneaky cameos in there if you pay close attention.
Somebody finally let that damn sample breathe!
This song would fit in one of them "cool kid" coffee shops where all the girls have natural hair, no one smiles and everybody gets into an unspoken competition over who can have the most subtle head nod when their jam comes on.
I was watching a Sigi v. Bruce video on TOW and it reminded me of this pic I got at the Draft in Philly this Spring. By far, this is the highlight of my illustrious soccer journo career.
I will say, though, that the moment when these two saw each other in the hall before walking into the draft room was a crowd-stopper. In a room full of MLS nerds, it doesn't get much better than this. But the best part was that you could actually SEE the ego vibes generating off these two fools. It was a hazy green color.
Based solely on their "heh, heh, heh" and knowing smile greeting, I'm totally convinced that the night before, The Sigi-Bruce was poppin' bottles in some 18+ club on Penn's Landing and telling co-eds that they were movie producers.
Ask for R&B and thou shalt receive it.
You got this song a few months ago. Glad it has a video. Probably my favorite smoove jam of 2010. Producer Robin Hannibal can do no wrong. Viva la Quadron.
It just dawned on me how little R&B I actually post here. Hmmm.
Anyway . . .I kinds efphs with this.
Swizz on the track. Paula Patton for a muse. Things are ok on Planet Thicke.
Personally, I'm still waiting for another "Wanna Love You Girl". How the hell does one sign with Star Trak and only end up with ONE Neptunes-produced hit??
FINALLY!!!
Feels like I've been waiting a year for this album to come out. I haven't even heard the whole thing yet, and I know it's gonna be Top 5-10 for the year. I need this album! You need this album! Hip-Hip needs this album!
And to make a great situation even greater, when you buy the album at UGHH.com, you get a bonus with ALL THE INSTRUMENTALS!! What?!
Deerhoof - The Merry Barracks by All Tomorrows Parties
Fantastic.
Evidence that all the world's guitars were not destroyed in a Brooklyn basement fire + just the right amount of seemingly random noise. My kinda jam. From the upcoming Deerhoof vs. Evil due in Jan.
04-All Good In The Hood by Sixty-Nine
Because the world is a better place when Jamiroquai has new jams out. Rock Dust Light Star coming some time in 2011.
Installment #4 of what is arguably the best mixtape series of this current era in Hip-Hop (make that timeline whatever you like). Mood Muzik tends to be better than most albums that come out in a given year (including Budden's own), so don't hesitate to download this.
Speaking of which,
Do yourself a favor, set aside some time, and watch this in full (34min):
I don't want to get into a predictable Kanye praise rant . . .but this is EXACTLY why Hip-Hop needs him. I've deliberately avoided reading reactions to this. Fans seem to be alergic to anything that isn't meant to be taken literally, so I imagine a short film full of symbolic imagery where a rapper falls in love with a flaming bird from another world might be hard for alot to digest. Ironic considering how much of the imagery in commercial rap is completely fabricated. To be honest it's embarrassing. Then again, Kanye is the living symbol of the new divide in Hip-Hop and Black pop culture as a whole*.
::stopping before I get into rock-snob territory::
I will say that Runaway made me appreciate some songs more than I did before, especially "Lost in the World". If Kanye's goal was to tell a good auto-biographical story and build anticipation for the album, then he's got a huge victory here.
* If we ever meet in person, give me a drink or 3, and start up a comvo about the whole Kanye v. 50 thing, and listen to me ramble for an hour about how that was the single biggest moment in Black pop culture (that didn't involve Obama) of the last 20yrs.
Soooo, this happened last night, and I wasn't there because at the advanced age of 28, being at a big concert venue like MSG with a bunch of screaming kids who act as though the band came to perform for them personally, puts me into a homocidal rage.
So I didn't go see Phoenix.
I fucked up.
Big time.
I am currently punching myself in the face
Evidence of 2 things:
1. Black Thought just might be the GOAT
2. Philadelphia is only 99% useless
What we have here is a mixtape that, as its name suggests, was recorded live during the performance you see above. Really simple, yet incredibly dope: J.Period plays a random beat . . .Black Thought goes off. Have some.
That album better be a classic.
Playing with fire, Mr. Cole.
Side note: I really wish more rappers had soccer players' names, because putting that picture up amuses the hell out of me and really does bring this slopfest of a blog full-circle.
As you know, I'm ridiculously excited to the release of this album on the 26th, but it looks like we won't have to wait too long to at least jam it until we can own it. Can't wait to get this in the car.
That's it.
I fucking give up.
This shit it terrible.
N.E.R.D. is finished.
They're the new Black Eyed Peas. Making music for 17yr old girls to listen to when they drink Smirnoff Ice and debate what they can do with their boyfriends and still claim virginity.
Yes...this is how a Wednesday should begin.
Now that "Difficult" is an official single, the remixes are gonna start popping up.
I am tremendously OK with this fact.
Side note: "2006 Parties Remix" is now, without question, the greatest name in the history of remixes. You know how your uncle is always like "booooy, you shoulda seen me back in '83!"? When I'm old and washed up, 2006 is gonna be the year I use to describe the absolute peak of my music and booze themed social adventures.
New album from Tanya Morgan's Von Pea is FINALLY OUT TODAY!!!
Put all of you Album of the Year contenders on pause, because without even hearing the whole thing, I am 100% certain that this is gonna be a contender.
Said it before, I'll say it again, thank God for Tanya Morgan.
They are the very epitome of the phrase "last of a dying breed".
Don't think I even mentioned it, but Asher and Nottz has a collabo mixtape together. I really don't remember when its coming out...or if it already has.
I'm not the biggest fan of Nottz rapping (he actually has a solo album out now), but after producing all of Rah Digga's Classics album, he gets a free pass to do whatever he wants for the next 12 months.
I've heard this song a dozen times and had no idea that Boy George was involved. I should know better. You gotta check the tracklisting on a Mark Ronson album, because anyone might pop up at random and have you making the "whaaaaaa?!" face.
9th Wonder on them beats.
This is crazy all around. I think we have the Song of the Week on Monday afternoon. Have some. The Hardy Boy Mystery Mixtape: Secret of Thee Green Magic, Oct. 27
UPDATE: Aaaaaaand because I'm a huge geek, I researched the sample and here it is(skip to 2:40)
Eternal LOLZ @ the cucumber melon Bath & Body Works shit.
Why on earth would any female R&B singer agree to be on this song?
Bah. So much more could have been done with this beat and those keys. Ah well.
It was more fun when Lupe was pretending that it wasn't him singing.
Now the accent just feels awkward. As if he wants to be a "punk" singer...but part of him is too afraid to really go for it. Ah well.
Let me make this clear to start: I Love Juan Pablo Angel. He has been an absolute god-send for the traditionally terrible team I pledge my loyalties to.
Forgive me if I'm missing something, but how is this NOT the absolute perfect time for Juan Pablo Angel to leave New York? What am I missing...other that blind sentimentality and the "same ol' Metro" misery of some of my fellow supporters?
Let's cut the romance for a second...
He's 10 days away from being 35.
He hasn't scored a non-penalty goal in well over 900 minutes of play.
He has a degenerative back condition.
He's never been a box office draw.
The pairing with Thierry Henry has been a tactical flop.
Our new front office (the local branch and the Austrians) have made it crystal clear that they have the connections, the finances, the ability and the willingness to make RBNY the shining star of this league, and quite possibly CONCACAF as a whole. This is the organization that brought us the best building in North America, Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez and a worst-to-first record all in the same year.
Somehow...the fans are STILL unsure if letting JPA go is the right move?? In what way is a fading, 35yr old, hobbled, ineffective striker a fitting piece in a future championship winning strategy? How are we unsure that Red Bull is capable of acquiring a player that can VASTLY improve on Angel's present-day production and marketing appeal?
Everything I read from fans/media type (same thing) about the greatness of Angel is written in the past tense. Plain and simple, he is NOT the man we watched 3-4 years ago, and expecting him to be at this point isn't just delusional, it's outright insane. The timing for him, the team, and us to move on is absolutely perfect. His contract is done this winter, so any catastrophe of a messy negotiations process can be avoided. He's still healthy enough to contribute somewhat-strongly to the best team he's been on since joining NY, and go out with a championship.
What BETTER time could there be for this to end?
Instead of falling back into our old traps of assuming that anything NY management decides is wrong, why can't we see the facts and the situation for what it really is?
Its a shame. Instead of getting the hero's farewell that it deserves, the Juan Pablo Angel era is going to end in fan turmoil, biased media hyperbole, and the "same ol' " misguided doubt that has surrounded the damn team for 14 years.
All City Chess Club - We Beamin' (Remix) by Detailsofmylife
I forgot all about the whole ACCC thing.
In this instance, the Club consists of Lupe, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton (ugh), the Cool Kids, Blu, Diggy, B.o.B, and someone named Dosage (?)
I'm pretty sure this song is about your Uncle Ricky. The one that keeps doing dumb shit, getting locked up, comes out and does the same dumb shit to get locked up again.
My Spot: Red Bull Arena article at Complex.com
If you live within 3hrs of North Jersey and even think you MIGHT like soccer (or beer, or variously ethnic women, or unnecessary vulgarity, or rampant tribalism), I don't understand how it's possible that you haven't been to Red Bull Arena yet. It is an absolute paradise...
Just ask Philadelphia Union fans*, they LOVE making the trip up to watch quality soccer in America's grandest venue with the league's best home atmosphere . . .even of gamedays when their own team is playing! (Whoops!)
If you remember, LPCO are the dudes that did the America remix I posted a few weeks ago.
I was skeptical about this. How on earth could you possibly make "PYT"better with a remix. LPCO was smart thou, it's more of a subtle tweak than a full-on remix. I guess that's why they called it an "edit". Good stuff.
Good mornin' internets!
Did you know that the BET Hip-Hop Awards was last night?
No? Me either.
Anyway...those of us over the age of 20 with any taste know that there is only one part of that fuckfest worth watching: The Cypher. SO...let's cut through the bullshit and get right to the spittin'...
Who decided to put Royce on with these people. Seriously?
And if you've ever heard Diamond do anything (consider yourself lucky if you haven't), you know she didn't write that shit.
I really don't understand the Wiz Khalifah hype. He might be the current crown-holder for Most Overrated young rapper. Yelawolf, huh?! Really want to be a fan...kid can spit, but the actual songs just don't do anything for me. 3 Cheers/Jeers to Raekwon for being the EXACT same emcee for 15yrs.
Where was Consequence?! Dope anyway. That's alotta bars for ONE record label. Good for CyHi to step up on this one. Probably the most exposure he's gotten in his career so far.
And there we have it folks. Now you don't have to TiVo through 2hrs of marble-mouthed southern rappers talking about god knows what. 15yr olds, doing dances on national television that would embarrass a minstrel performer, and trophies being awarded for songs that are 90% hook.
(Pretty clean) Radio rip. This will appear as a bonus track on pre-orders of the self-titled album. An album that I will personally come to your house and delete all your music if you don't get it.
I don't know a thing about the origi version of this, but the remix is extra dope.
The singer reminds me of a less-French version of dude from Phoenix.
This is the New Yorkiest song I've heard in a while. Thought this sound was dead.
And the name Hester Prynn sounds really familiar. Do we know her from somewhere already?
It's really incredible how much better LP is when they reign Chester in a little. I might actually have to check out this album. Beats are kinda crazy.
I assume actual Linkin Park fans hate this album though, right?
Not miserable and whiny enough?
Child Rebel Soldier - Don't Stop! by ErkaOfficial
GOOD Friday jam of the week comes from the alternative rap nerd super-group, CRS. We've been waiting forever from something out of this crew, but....ehhhhhh...not feeling this. But if you are, download it here and get a cleaner mix of the one that dropped Friday.
Man...first a Daft Punk x N.E.R.D. jam is whack as all whackness...now this. Bad week for my favorite artists.
There's something odd going on with this song...
In the last month, we've gotten a new video, new remix EP, and no less than 3 Hip-Hop joints sampling the hook . . .for a song that's damn near 2yrs old at this point. Very odd.
Did you know that Malice had written a book . . .about getting up on some Jesus?!
Am I late on him finding religion?
Pusha getting a solo deal with G.O.O.D. makes even more sense now.
There was a time when my iPod featured more music from the UK than most regions of the United States.
Strangely, the Brits don't really make "happy" music, but those songs are the soundtrack to the "happiest" parts of my 20's. I guess that's what this was all about. Go figure.
Side note: Doesn't that kid in the video look like a mini version of the Hobbit that was on Lost?!
Glad I saw this, I forgot about Versis.
If you check the archives, you'll see I threw a couple of really dope joints from the kid (he's 19?!) up on the page a few months back, but he's since slipped my mind. Now, it appears that his debut album has been released. Hope he gets some shine.
Mr. Cole is playing a very dangerous game. There's alot of good music out there for an artist with no album. No one is going to give him credit for all this quality work if his first proper LP is equally good. Ask Wale.
YEAH! All hail the Frenchonese!
This song makes me want to star in and direct a Ferris Bueller sequel.
FB2: Rooney's Revenge..."This time, it's personal". In 3-D!
I wasn't sure if I liked this. The audio was missing a bit of a kick.
Then I found an .mp3, and it jams in a more proper fashion...so thumbs up. Aspirins - CUTTER 2010 by aspirins
Hmmm.
Soooo...for some reason, there's a new remix EP of Cajmere's legendary '92 (right?) hood classic. The only production team I'm familiar with on this thing is Major Lazer...and they done went and made a video.
And now, we have Mood Muzik Mondays...
Each Monday, from now until the release of Mood Muzik 4, Budden will release one track.
See, kids...it is possible to write emotional and instrospective Hip-Hop without coming off like a whiny, high school freshman mad that he has to sit at the geek table.
You know what time it is.
First up is this week's GOOD Friday jam that wasn't supposed to happen (Kanye was pissed about the 2 song leaks last week and said he was gonna put it on hold for the week):
Not really doing anything for me. Buuuuuut, it's not on the album, so whatever.
And I think this might be the official farewell to Kid CuDi on this blog. I can't take it anymore.
Moving along...
Kanye rocked SNL with "Power" and got the Pusha T assist on "Runaway" later. And you know there was now way he was using that same subway-station-from-Mars performance stage as everyone else. I must say, though...I am VERY VERY VERY disappointed in Kanye for swapping the 2nd verse of "Power". At least it was a decent verse.
It's amazing how much better "Runaway" sounds with the added vocal samples.
