Random Thoughts #14: Keith Murray, You Say?

The dude at the desk next to mine just said his name was Keith Murray, so I feel more than obligated to do this:

Waaaait...there's another Keith Murray.  The vocalist/guitarist from We Are Scientists! And just like that, we have an opposing genre 2-for-1 sale:

I had way too much fun with that.
I am The Geek.

We Are Scientists - Rules Don't Stop

We Are Scientists - Rules Don't Stop by PIAS/Integral

WAS's first album, With Love And Squalor, from 2006 will forever be the score to the film that was my mid-20's.  They had an almost creepy knack for writing songs that mirror exact situations I was dealing with, both good and bad.  Very strange.  Almost Truman Show-like.

2nd album...meeeeh.
They tried too hard to get BBC Radio 1 spins and it showed.

Now, we get the first single from album #3.  The writing has resumed the situational creepification of the first album, but the music is as lame and poppy as album #2.  I am The Torn.

HOWEVER...I will hold fast to the "first singles tend to be shit" rule, and hope for better things.

FLASHBACK: We Are Scientists - Worth The Wait

Ahhh, We Are Scientists.  I miss these dudes.  Unbeknownst  to them, they wrote and recorded the album that will forever serve as the musical score of my mid-20's.  Word-for-word, and song-for-song, With Love And Squalor could have been written by someone who followed me around like Jane Goodall from 2005-07.

W-A-S was (see what I did there?) always especially interesting because their personas and on-stage banter has always been HEAVILY based on bizarre comedy (which some found bothersome)...but they haven't recorded a single overtly "happy" song.  That...and the fact that JUST as Brooklyn was going from "BROOKLYN" to "Brooklyn", and every indie band alive was claiming residence... these two pissed of to England and became radio stars.  Amazing, really.

We Are Scientists + Kings of Leon

Much like the first time I tried Choconilla Rice Krispies, I am cautious...yet very much intrigued.

Hey, locals . . .
We Are Scientists and Kings of Leon (not sure who's "supporting" who) are playing The Electric Factory in Philly next Saturday night (the 15th). Sounds like a mighty fine show to me. I can imagine they draw very different crowds (with the exception of KoL newbies like me). Should be entertaining on and off stage.

Also, W-A-S are flying solo in Asbury Park (at Wonder Bar??) on the 21st, and Irving Plaza in the City on the 22nd.

What say you, good people?

"A Short Love Story In Stop Motion"

A SHORT LOVE STORY IN STOP MOTION from Carlos Lascano on Vimeo.

Watch in HD here.

Apparently, tonight is the night for jaw-droppingly amazing animation.
If you're thinking that the melody in the background sounds familiar, you're not crazy. It's Sigur Ros' "Hoppipolla". Don't worry...I won't tell your friends that that video and song really got to you. It's not your fault. The song's not even in English, and it's impossible not to get emotional when you hear it.

Or better yet...click here and be amazed at the fact that you didn't know that We Are Scientists covered the song (same vid, different audio).
