H&M Would Rather Destroy Unsold Clothes Than Donate Them

Story from the NY Times:
"At the back entrance on 35th Street, awaiting trash haulers, were bags of garments that appear to have never been worn. And to make sure that they never would be worn or sold, someone had slashed most of them with box cutters or razors, a familiar sight outside H & M’s back door."

I don't understand how anyone or even any company could be this cruel. What could it possibly cost them to donate these to the homeless?

I understand them not wanting an opportunist to try to make an easy buck off them but that's not going to happen if they're donated to people who desperately need better clothing.

And if it's true that they did it because they don't want the brand associated with the homeless, there's no words. The homeless are treated badly enough as it is, how many people would actually go close enough to see what brand their clothes were? It wouldn't stop anyone shopping at H&M. The brand isn't being tarnished, the company isn't in danger, fashion jobs are not being put at risk. This isn't one of those cruel, but necessary decisions. It's just cruel.
